Montenegro Votes For Independence Today

May 21st, 2006 | By: Lyle | 15 Comments »

In Montenegro today people are voting for independence from the union with Serbia. It is expected that Montenegro will in fact separate itself politically from Serbia.

This will have no effect whatsoever on the World Cup team. It may, however, effect the 2008 European Cup qualifying matches since those matches have already been scheduled. It is possible Serbia and Montenegro will remain a team through the 2008 Euro Cup before permanently splitting up.

Actually, it will have an effect. This will be the only World Cup at which “Serbia & Montenegro” would ever have had a presence. The history of the Balkans is being written also on the football pitches.

The will play together the 2008 campaign. Things like this happened already in the past with Czechia and Slovakia or the CIS. In both cases, they played the tournament the had accreditated for together.

holland and croatia will exit after second or first round…

concerning the montenegro independence vote… your right Lyle, it doesnt change anything as FIFA previousley announced that they qualified as ONE team and so they will present both countries as one team at the world cup.

Either way Montenegro and Serbia are still in the shtis no matter what the result would have been. Montenegrins are fooling themselves if they think that going down the same poverty stricken path that Croatia, Bosna and Macedonia will help them in the long run.

Long live Bratsko i Jednestivno!!!

Long live the memory of Yugoslavia, and a country that fought for Slavic unity in this god forsaken World lol

This vote of independace is definetly a psyschological blow to the SCG national side. There will be less unity amongst the players. They know they will no longer be playing together. As SCG will only exist on the pages of history and in the minds of Yugoslav romantics.

Tensions will certainly be high in the dressing room between the Serbian and Montengrian players.

P.S. Will Serbian Navy now be patrolling the Danube?

People im from S&M, and trust me, the players are as one. They play together, laugh together hang out together so there is no worry about it :) We will also be the “positive surprise” on this WC.Dont forget, in a 10 games only 1 goal was taken…

Marko,

I have a feeling tensions between the Serbian and Montenegrin players will not be bad at all. Petkovic is bringing the same group of guys that have been playing together for years. They’ll do fine. It just makes for an interesting situation.

No psychological effect whatsoever. The team is a closed unity and they share deep friendships and understanding. the Serbs are not angry at the Montnenegrins and vice versa. This is purely a political and economic division, but no cultural …

It will take a lot more than a referendum to seperate us. It might be two countries but we’re still one people. And P.S. This will ahve no effect on the team as only 2 players (Jevric & Vucinic) are from Montenegro.

This is specially for little CRNO GORAC from Australia! What do you know about Montenegro. I think nothin. You’ve probably never been there before since it costs you guys 35,000 to go there for a simple vacation and you probably don’t know what poverty means. So shut up and keep livin in that god awful place called AUSTRIALIA.
