Đukić Calls Up First Squad

By: Martha | January 18th, 2008 | 4 Comments »

Drinkin on the job.Ahead of the February 6 friendly against Macedonia, new gaffer Miroslav Đukić has called up his first senior team. (Please notice what appears to be a bottle of beer on the table in front of him — that’s my kind of press conference.)

Goalkeepers: Radiša Ilić (OFK Beograd), Damir Kahriman (Konyaspor).

Defenders: Antonio Rukavina (BV Borussia Dortmund), Marjan Marković (FK Dinamo Kyiv), Ivica Dragutinović (Sevilla FC), Duško Tošić (Werder Bremen), Nemanja Vidić (Manchester United FC), Branislav Ivanović (Chelsea FC), Gojko Kačar (FK Vojvodina Novi Sad), Nemanja Rnić (FK Partizan Beograd).

Midfielders: Dejan Stanković (FC Internazionale Milano), Nenad Kovačević (RC Lens),Milan Smiljanić (RCD Espanyol de Barcelona), Boško Janković (US Città di Palermo), Miloš Krasić (PFK CSKA Moskva), Zoran Tošić (FK Partizan Beograd), Zdravko Kuzmanović (ACF Fiorentina), Stefan Babović (FC Nantes).

Strikers: Nikola Žigić (Valencia CF), Danko Lazović (PSV Eindhoven), Milan Jovanović (Royal Standard de Liège), Ranko Despotović (FC Rapid Bucureşti).

Thoughts, anyone?

Apart from the entirely new goalkeeping corps, it’s a strong team with a lot of familiar names, but the odds of him getting all these guys for a friendly are pretty slim, particularly those coming from teams not on break, and busy fighting for league titles or European spots. For example, given how delicate Stanković’s health has been this season, how likely are Inter to release him for a friendly, when they finally have him fit for the first time since last summer? And no Bojan. Boo! Đukić’s self-proclaimed emphasis on youth combined with the desperate need to convince the kid to pick Serbia means Bojan should get a damn call — and soon, too, before Spain offer him a senior cap, and he makes the obvious choice.

Also, the World Cup qualifiers have finally been scheduled, along with a trio of friendies; the upcoming calendar is after the jump.

Đukić is Official

Badass ĐukićIt was announced yesterday (Christmas press conferences are always a great idea) that former U-21 and Partizan Belgrade coach Miroslav Đukić will take charge of the Serbian national team starting January 1.
Since his resignation from the Partizan bench last week, it’s been a foregone conclusion that Đukić would get the job, but ... [read]

The Appointment of a New Coach Nears (Maybe)

By: Martha | December 20th, 2007 | 3 Comments »

ĐukićAfter a couple weeks of quiet, rumors have suddenly started erupting in the international media about who is going to be appointed to the Serbia bench.
Yesterday, the reports were all about Italians who, given the frenzy surrounding Fabio Capello’s arrival in England, are evidently all the rage these days. Not to be outdone, ... [read]

The Latest on Red Star — Detentions, Fines and More

Red Star flagI wrote a bit about this on the front page over the weekend, but just to sum up, Zoran Damjanović, director of stadium Miodrag Ćorović, security commissioner Novica Mijušković, and Rade Popović (the Serbian Football Association rep at the Red Star ground during the violence) are all going to be held for ... A Bad Week For Red Star

By: Martha | December 7th, 2007 | 4 Comments »

The thrill arrest by plainclothes cops.Man. It has NOT been a good seven days for Red Star Belgrade.
First, there was the horrific attack of a plainclothes cop at the Hajduk Kula match, footage and shocking photographs of which, ripe as they were for (quite reasonable) sensationalizing, went all over the world, and didn’t ... [read]

Clemente Sacked

By: Martha | December 6th, 2007 | 4 Comments »

No more Clemente(I’m Martha. I’m new.)
As has been expected since the failure to qualify for Euro 2008, the Serbian FA (AKA the FSS) parted ways with the country’s first-ever coach, Javier Clemente, today. (Or, rather, they will when his contract runs out on December 31.)
Clemente has said all along that he wanted to ... [read]

Enjoyed Blogging For Serbia and Montenegro

Even though not being a Serb or Montenegrin, I enjoyed writing for your team. It was difficult coming up with stuff not being linguistically connected to Mother Serbia, and I am studying to take the Texas Bar Exam and that has prevented me from being totally dedicated to this blog. Special thanks to Jadran Sport for being ... [read]

Dissapointing World Cup

By: Lyle | June 16th, 2006 | 3 Comments »

Ah… the good guys are going home after only 2 games… so very dissapointing. They could have done better. Maybe Nemanja Vidic and Vukic could have helped out, but the Argentines were not going to be beaten. Their first half display is by far the best half of football played at the World Cup so far.
